A simple salt-water rinse can cut hayfever symptoms by around 28% and reduce how much medication you need by up to two thirds. It costs almost nothing, has no meaningful side effects, and NICE includes it in clinical guidance. Yet most people have never tried it.

Here's why it works. When pollen lands inside your nose, it doesn't just trigger an immediate reaction — it sits against the lining, releasing allergens and nudging your immune system toward a sustained state of alert. Rinsing flushes that pollen out mechanically before it gets the chance. It also clears away the inflammatory proteins that build up during a reaction, and it restores the tiny hair-like structures — mucociliary clearance — that your nasal lining uses to sweep debris outward. Hypertonic solutions (slightly saltier than your body's own fluids) go a step further by reducing the swelling in nasal tissue that makes congestion feel so heavy.

A 2012 meta-analysis by Hermelingmeier and colleagues pulled together the best available evidence and found a 27.66% reduction in allergic rhinitis symptoms, a 66% drop in medication use, and a 31% improvement in mucociliary clearance for people rinsing regularly. More recent trials confirm that combining irrigation with intranasal corticosteroids outperforms either approach alone — so it works alongside your existing treatment, not instead of it.

To get the benefit: rinse with a high-volume squeeze bottle or neti pot, two to three times a day during peak season, using a pre-made sterile saline solution or one made with pre-boiled and cooled water. Do it before applying any nasal spray — a clear passage absorbs medication better.

Always use sterile or pre-boiled water, never water straight from the tap — the risk is very small, but tap water can carry microorganisms that shouldn't enter the nasal cavity.

Can nasal irrigation reduce allergen load?

Nasal irrigation with saline solutions effectively reduces allergen load in nasal passages through mechanical clearance, with a 2012 meta-analysis (Hermelingmeier et al.) demonstrating a 27.66% reduction in AR symptoms, 66% decrease in medication use, and 31.19% improvement in mucociliary clearance. Multiple RCTs and comparative studies confirm that nasal irrigation—particularly high-volume, low-pressure methods used 2–3 times daily—provides clinically meaningful symptom relief and, when combined with intranasal steroids, outperforms either treatment alone. High-volume irrigation (125–176 mL, 3x/day) in steroid-free AR patients has also been shown to prevent seasonal IgE elevation, suggesting direct attenuation of allergen-driven immune responses.

How it works

Saline irrigation mechanically dilutes and flushes allergens, inflammatory mediators, and mucus from nasal mucosa, preserving epithelial barrier integrity and limiting allergen penetration and subsequent IgE sensitization. Hypertonic solutions additionally reduce mucosal edema and restore impaired mucociliary clearance, further accelerating allergen removal from the nasal cavity.
