Two things are happening at once. First, a broken night. Nasal congestion forces mouth-breathing, fragments sleep, and triggers dozens of small wake-ups that most people don't even remember. That accumulated sleep debt hits your cognitive reserve hard by morning. Second, the immune response itself reaches the brain. The same chemical alarm signals — cytokines and histamine — that inflame your nasal lining also interfere with the neural circuits that handle focus and memory. Your body isn't broken; it's just running a heavy background process you can't switch off.
The numbers are striking. Children with allergic rhinitis miss around three times more school days than unaffected peers, and when they do show up, classroom productivity is estimated to fall by 37–42% — effectively wiping out a quarter of their useful academic hours during pollen season. The treatment trap is worth knowing: first-generation antihistamines — the kind that make you drowsy — compound the problem rather than fix it. Their sedating effects add to the cognitive load on top of what the allergy is already doing.
The practical answer is straightforward. A non-sedating antihistamine taken in the evening, combined with a daily intranasal corticosteroid spray, addresses both the inflammatory burden and the sleep disruption — restoring more of the mental clarity that pollen season quietly steals.

How it works
